What is a Homestead Exemption?
A homestead exemption is a property tax benefit for homeowners who live in their home as their primary residence.
Why should you apply?
✔ Helps lower your property taxes
✔ Protects you from certain tax increases
⚠ This benefit is not automatic
Who qualifies?
✔ You own the home
✔ It is your primary residence
✔ You lived in the home on or before January 1st of the tax year
❌ Second homes and investment properties do not qualify
County-by-County Instructions
Cobb County
How to apply:
•Online or in person through the Cobb County Tax Assessor
What you typically need:
•Valid Georgia Driver’s License (matching the property address)
•Proof of residence (if requested)
📍 Once approved, the exemption automatically renews, unless ownership or residency changes.
Fulton County
How to apply:
•Online, by mail, or in person
Important Note:
•Fulton County is very strict about primary residence verification
•The address on your ID must match the property address
📍 New homeowners must reapply, even if the previous owner had the exemption
Gwinnett County
How to apply:
•Online or in person through the Gwinnett County Assessor
Good to know:
•Gwinnett offers several exemption levels depending on age and status
•Basic Homestead is the most common
📍 Approval remains in place as long as the home stays your primary residence

When do you need to reapply?
• You recently purchased the home
• Ownership changed
• You moved
• The home is no longer your primary residence
Homestead exemptions do not transfer automatically from a previous owner.
